Service Review Guide (including What is this Alexa stuff?):
Unfortunately none of this is of much use unless you have a web site. It is always best to consider your budget and what the web hosting provider can offer you for your website needs. You can research and read reviews about which best web host will satisfy you and learn about having your own domain. The cost of having your own domain and web site has been progressively decreasing and the benefits to business progressively increasing to the point that a business domain and web site is something that can add value to every business and every business should have one. To do this you need to purchase a Domain Name and find somebody to host it for you so we have included a reviewed list of both Domain Registration Providers and Web Hosting Providers. For each provider we have both reviewed their service offering (in many cases we have or still do use their services) and provided information sourced from Alexa to help the selection process. Service reviews are based directly on our own experience with the service provider or providers we have not used but who have rated highly in our provider search and we believe offer good value. Alexa data is included to provide further insight into the provider. So what is this Alexa stuff?
Alexa is basically a web site that collects information about web sites (including itself). It does this by recording web browsing data sent to it by members of what it a calls the "Alexa Toolbar community" and providing a third party avenue for web users to post reviews and comments on the web sites they visit and use. This system is far from perfect and it can be manipulated. However having said that Alexa is a very useful tool if you want to find out a little more about any web site before you commit, it is not perfect but it is better than nothing. With this in mind we have included three Alexa statistics for each service provider review. These statisitcs will only be displayed when you have JavaScript enabled on your browser and will appear just like this:
Rank - this relates to how popular the web site is, with ranking 1 being the highest. The ranking will give you an indication of how many visitors the site has relative to other sites. Keep in mind that Rank only tells you that one site has more or less visitors than another not how many visitors more or less and that there are 100's of millions of web sites ranging from massive internet based businesses (ie Yahoo) to the sites of private individuals. For a small business site to reach the top 100,000 it is doing well. Also as stated by Alexa for statistical reasons "Traffic Rankings of 100,000+ should be regarded as not reliable". Generally the lower the Rank number the more people use the site, usually a good thing.
Links In - relates to the number of hyperlinks that lead to the site. When other sites link to a site it tends to indicate that they belive it is worth linking ie it provides some value (either to the person that linked to it or the person that clicks on the link). But possibly even more important is that it often takes time to achieve a large number of links in so it also can indicate that site has some permanence. Generally the higher the Links In number the better.
Review - this provides an indication of what other people (pretty much anybody) think of the web site and its services. Alexa allows web users to post comments and rate sites the Review indicates how well the site has been rated (in stars up to 5). You can also read the comments for each web site at Alexa by clicking on the Alexa Site Info for each site. More Review stars means on average people rated it higher.
Service Reviews are provided as an indicative service only. They do not imply endorsement, and all services must be individually assessed.
Visit Alexa to learn more about its services, you can even become a member of the "Alexa Toolbar community".
